Following my last post couple of weeks ago, I am beginning to post a series of proposed solutions for our traffic problems. First of lets start with the most basic question – Is there a traffic problem in Chennai? Answer: Yes. No arguments.
Now, lets move on. What can we do about this? A wide range of ideas have been floating around the Internet – starting from educating drivers to burning bad drivers on a stake. Lets take a realistic approach. What’s stopping us from implementing a good road traffic system here in Chennai?
- Bad infrastructure
- Corrupt law enforcers
- Too much political intervention in the judicial system
- Ignorance of traffic rules by public
- Utter disregard to traffic rules by public
- HUGE Population!
- No accountability at any level in the traffic department
- Lack of belief on people’s part that things could possibly be better
Ok. Now we have a list of problems. What can we do about it? It’s not going to be an easy task. It’s going to take time. It’s going to take interference and commitment from the educated lot in the population. But, it’s going to be possible. Let’s, start from the basics. Let’s go back to the rudiments of the Indian Traffic system. Let’s revisit the city planning model. Let’s see what can be done without impossible goals stopping us from making the place a better place to live in. First and foremost, I am not interested in trying to solve the traffic problems by infrastructure solutions alone.
Let’s see why would want to make things better in the first place. What’s wrong with this chaos? What real change are we trying to bring about here.
- Make driving SAFE
- Make driving less-stressful and pleasurable
- Make the traffic faster
- Increase pedestrian safety
- Making it easy to deliver justice in the event of accidents
- Accommodating the ever increase need for space for more and more vehicles on the road
- Most importantly – To ensure that the drivers and passengers on the road are still alive at the end of the journey
- Setting an example to the coming generations.

I feel that your approach towards a solution for the congestion is wrong. The one step that can virtually eliminate the traffic situation is to develop the bus service and encourage it big time. If there is a reason why chennai is not as clogged as bangalore, it is beacause the mtc still provides a cheap and decent alternative.
Using yor private vehicle is ok for a family trip to the mall or other special occaisons, but for daily commutes buses and carpooling are the only way to go, if the peak hour jams are to be brought down.
Increasing road widths just encourages more cars. How else do you explain 18 lane highways in US with bumper to bumper traffic.

Almost 10% of the global road traffic accidents occur in India. Much of the world wide web is full of sarcasm & mocking of the indisciplined driving on Indian roads. Unfortunately in since 60 years since independence the authorities have failed to publish a National Highway code. It is by far the most comprehensive website providing training in defensive driving. Learning simple road habits can make our roads safe and also free up congestion caused by traffic chaos.
At present 17 driver education videos aimed at changing the driving culture on Indian roads are available. The video are unique in that the footage is real life action from streets of London. We have copied the Western habits: Replaced the dhoti with denim, high rise buildings for Indian cottages, burgers and coke instead of Indian breads and perhaps sugarcane juice. Surely we can copy the Western ways of travelling too.

The more roads are widened more the number of vehicles using the road as public parking! It is easy to get loans for buying vehicles but where is the parking space? The answer is very simple. Roads, which are meant for movement, mainly. Maybe the government should think of fining the public parkers;those who do it in front of their flats/houses due to lack of parking space inside or collect Parking fees on a monthly basis which can be used for improving traffic conditions. Many may remember the accident in KK nagar involving a bus and two two wheelers resulting in the death of a boy and injury to other youngsters(One boy and two girls), near Padma seshadri school a year back. What I heard was the road is a one way and it was made so because of parking of vehicles by a Travels on that road. There is/was a petty shop on the bus stop forcing people to stand on the road. So the bus had to stop only in the centre of the road. The youngsters were not wearing helmets, but each vehicle had a helmet attached to the vehicle! Who is to be blamed?

Millions of people are affected everyday with air and noise pollution emanating from the vehicular traffic, thousands of two,three,four wheelers and buses ply on our roads back and forth and literally assaulting us with the pollutants.
I am an anti noise activist and working to create a public awareness about the harmful effects of noise on our hearing and health.
Instead of educating people to refrain from making noise which is an impossible task, I have introduced a brand of earplugs which they can use to guard themselves from the noise pollution.

The biggest problem we are facing today in India is the HUGE population. It is because of this humongous population our culture has turned into a unfairly competitive one. While this may be good for getting into top institutes like IIT and getting a dream job abroad, it translates into utter contempt for every other fellow citizen who we can only see as a competitor. As Indians we cant rest assured with being good in whatever we do, we have to eliminate millions of fellow citizens who are equally good or better. This applies to behaviour on the road where there is no guarantee that we would get past the traffic signal because of thousands of vehicles in front of us. Unless we Indians realize that population needs to be drastically controlled and do not succumb to social pressure (parents, uncles, aunts & other relative forcing us to have more children), the traffic situation or for that matter environmental degradation, dwindling resources, lack of space etc are not going to improve in the near future.
